Why I’m the Perfect Photographer to Cover Your Party or Event

“I’m 38, and this year was the first time I’ve ever had a birthday party…”

Why share this sentimental story? I want you to know that I empathize with the effort, and emotion, that goes into throwing an event. So let's jump into the time machine and travel 30 years into the past.

It was 1991, and I was a little boy who had just moved to a foreign country, called St. Lucia. I was one of those chubby, new kids, with a weird accent, and I didn’t have too many friends. Nevertheless, it was almost my birthday, so to celebrate, I decided I would ask my classmates to join me at my home for a party. They all agreed, but none of them showed up! So there I was, staring at a house full of uneaten food, and decorations. The party guests: just two of my mom’s friends, who were staring back at me, with doughy eyes.

Until 2021, I never tried throwing another celebration. It took me 30 years, but once again; I attempted a birthday party for myself, this time at the home of a close friend. A lot of people important to me showed up, and I even had a locally renowned, talented singer perform a few of her own songs. My wife had been out of the country for a while, but even she was able to make it, despite my fears that she wouldn’t. So there I was, a grown, 38 year old man, happy that people cared enough to make him feel special on that particular day. Yes. The party was a success, and I was misty-eyed with emotion when everyone left.

The emotion: a profound word, because that is my target when I take pictures at an event, party, or wedding. I know you want those candid moments: when someone gives a friend (who actually showed up!) that teary smile, that hug, that kiss — captured forever.
